Australia has never been wealthier. Nor, since the Second World War, has it been more strategically exposed.

Drawing on history, geography, economics and practical examples, this book challenges many of the assumptions that have shaped Australian policy for generations. It offers a clear, practical framework for building a stronger, more resilient nation while making better use of the resources Australia already possesses.

David Wilson argues that Australia does not need
to spend vastly more or fundamentally reshape its way of life. Instead, it needs a coherent Grand Strategy that aligns decisions made across government with the nation’s long-term security. In this way, Australia can strengthen its ability to withstand crisis, deter aggression and protect its people.

This is not just a book about defence. It is a book about the future of Australia.

Description

"The warning was clear. Australia faces a deteriorating strategic environment and is not adequately prepared for it. The risks are not
unknown. They have been identified, assessed and published. The problem is not a lack of information but a lack of action.

Before closing, Melick noted a contemporary symptom of this drift. A recent survey found only a minority of young Australians are willing to fight for their country. It wasn’t a criticism, but the implication was plain: a nation that expects safety without cost risks finding that safety slipping away.

This set up the conclusion of his address. If Australians wished to maintain the stability they assumed to be normal, he said, ‘the Commonwealth must be prepared to spend more liberally than it has ever done on its defence and defence forces’. And then, stepping back from immediate questions of budgets and defence spending, he made a broader appeal. Australia, he said, needed to think about its security as a whole and to develop what he called a ‘Grand Strategy’: a coherent national framework for responding to an era of mounting risk. What would a Grand Strategy look like? It begs the question, what would John Monash do?"
